Women's Surf Retreat
Come for the waves. Leave knowing yourself a little differently.
There are things the ocean teaches us that are difficult to learn anywhere else.
Patience. Humility. Courage.
How to commit when you're unsure.
How to let go when you're not in control.
How to fall, laugh, paddle back out and try again.
For more than a decade, we've watched women arrive at Sansara for yoga retreats, wellness escapes and vacations - many having never imagined themselves as surfers.
And then they get in the water.
"That was the best surf lesson I've ever had."
"I didn't know I could do that."
We've heard these words again and again.
We've watched nervous first-timers catch their first wave. We've watched returning surfers finally understand something they'd been struggling with for years. We've watched confidence build - one paddle, one wave, one session at a time.
And somewhere along the way, we realized:
Surfing isn't simply one of the things we offer at Sansara. It's one of the most powerful experiences we create. So we're giving it an entire week.
This isn’t surf bootcamp. And it isn’t a wellness retreat with a surf lesson added to the itinerary. Surfing is the heart of the week.
Six nights in wild, beautiful Cambutal. Five days of surfing. Exceptional coaching. Intentional movement. Recovery. Nourishment. And just 14 women.
Everything surrounding your time in the ocean has been intentionally designed to help you surf better, understand your body better, recover well and become more confident int he water. Whether you’re catching your first green wave or trying to unlock the next stage of your surfing, you’ll be met exactly where you are.
Because there’s something powerful about women learning together. Surfing asks us to trust our bodies. To take up space. To make decisions. To commit even when we’re uncertain. And then, almost immediately, it humbles us.
The ocean doesn’t care about your age, your title, your accomplishments or whether you looked particularly graceful falling off your last wave. You paddle back out.
Somewhere between the nerves, laughter, wipeouts and those beautiful moments when everything finally clicks, something begins to shift. You trust yourself a little more. And that feeling has a funny way of following you back to shore.
A surf program is only as good as the people teaching it. Our surf team has spent years helping Sansara guests develop something much deeper than the ability to stand on a board. We teach you to understand the ocean.
Leading the experiences is Leah Oak Johnson, professional surfer and part of the Sansara surf family for more than a decade. Leah brings technical knowledge, intuition and an incredible ability to understand what each surfer needs to progress.
Alongside Leah is Luis Ortega, Sansara’s Surf Director, whose knowledge of Cambutal’s coastline, conditions, and local breaks has been built through years in these waters.
And because we’ve limited this retreat to 14 women, coaching stays personal. Our coaches get to know you. How you move. Where you’re getting stuck. What you’re afraid of. What you’re ready for next. Sometimes the smallest adjustment changes everything.
Learn to surf. Learn to understand the ocean. Conditions set the rhythm of the week. That’s intentional. Part of becoming a surfer is understanding that we work with the ocean rather than asking the ocean to work around our schedule.
Across five days, your surf experience may include:
Because progression doesn’t only happen while someone is coaching you. Sometimes you just need another wave.
Move better. Surf stronger. Recover intentionally.
Surfing demands a unique combination of mobility, strength, endurance, breath, and nervous system regulation. So we’re going to train those things intentionally. Our female retreat host will bring together her passion for surfing and movement through programming designed specifically to complement your time in the ocean.
Think:
Pre-Surf Activation | Short, functional sessions preparing shoulders, spine, hips and core for the water.
Mobility + Functional Movement | Movement designed around the demands surfing actually places on the body.
Breath + Nervous System | Tools for staying calm, managing fear and recovering when the ocean challenges you.
Post-Surf Recovery | Mobility, restorative practices and intentional down-regulation after long sessions in the water.
This isn’t about exhausing your body. It’s about learning how to support it.
Recovery is part of training. Throughout the week, we’ll weave Sansara’s expanding wellness experiences into your surf progression.
Sauna. Cold. Breath. Bodywork. Mobility. Rest.
You’ll begin to understand not only how to push your body – but when it needs recovery, nourishment and space. Because becoming stronger doesn’t always mean doing more.
Food has always been central to the Sansara experience. During this week, we’ll take that conversation a little deeper. What does your body need before a long surf session? How do you replenish afterward. How do you support yourself through five consecutive days in the ocean without turning nutrition into another set of rules?
Through a dedicated Fuel the Female Surfer experience, we’ll explore practical approaches to nourishment, hydration, energy and recovery that you can carry home with you.
And then we’ll sit down and eat. Beautiful food. A long table. Bare feet and salty hair. Because wellness should still taste really good.
Some of the best moments of a surf trip happen when nobody is surfing.
A massage after a big morning in the water. A slow afternoon beside the pool. A bike ride through Cambutal. Walking down to check the waves with someone who was a stranger three days ago. Watching the sun disappear into the Pacific.
Sitting around the dinner table recounting the day’s waves. The one you caught. The one you missed. The one you’re still thinking about.
That’s where a retreat becomes something more than an itinerary. It becomes community.
We know traveling to a wild corner of Panama can sound like part of the adventure. We prefer to make it feel easy. From the moment you reserve your space, our concierge team helps guide you through the journey.
Your retreat includes:
Need a night in Panama City before or after your retreat. We also partner with select Panama City hotels and can connect you with preferred rates to make your arrival and departure as seamless as possible.
You book the flight. We’ll help connect the rest.
You don’t need to call yourself a surfer to come on a surf retreat. This week is for the woman who has always wanted to learn but hasn’t found the right environment. The woman who caught a few waves once and hasn’t stopped thinking about them. The beginner ready to move beyond simply standing up. The intermediate surfer who knows there’s another level waiting for her. The surfer who rarely gets five consecutive days to focus on her own progression.
The woman craving an active vacation – but who also whats beautiful food, thoughtful movement, recovery and care.
And maybe it’s for the woman who needs to remember:
I am strong. I am capable. I can still surprise myself.
Surfing doesn’t promise mastery. The ocean makes sure of that.
Instead, it gives us something much more interesting. The intelligence to reach what’s happening around us. The humility to know when to wait. The courage to know when to go. The resilience to paddle back out when things don’t go as planned.
And the incredible feeling of discovering that your body is capable of something you weren’t entirely sure it could do.
Come experience it for yourself.
