Sansara officially Joins Small Luxury Hotels of the World™

Sansara

There are certain moments in business that feel less like milestones and more like quiet confirmations – moments where you pause and realize something you once imagined from far away has slowly become real.

For Sansara, becoming part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ is one of those moments.

Sansara has just recently officially joined SLH, a globally recognized collection of independently owned luxury boutique hotels spanning more than 100 countries worldwide.  The partnership places Sansara among a carefully curated group of properties known not for size or scale, but for individuality, experience, and meaningful hospitality.

More significantly, Sansara has become the first property on Panama’s Pacific coast to join the collection.

But for founders Janel and Mike, the story began long before the acceptance email arrived.

A Full Circle Moment

About eight years ago, while staying at the American Trade Hotel, Janel noticed a brass plaque near the entrance that read:

Small Luxury Hotels of the World™

“I remember looking at it and saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be incredible if one day Sansara could be part of something like that?'” Janel recalls.

“At the time, it felt very far away.  More a dream than possibility.”

Nearly a year ago, that dream unexpectedly resurfaced when Janel came across SLH’s Wellbeing Collection online.

“I sent Mike and Lynda a screenshot and wrote: ‘We need to become part of the wellbeing collection.’  Not because it felt aspiration – because it felt aligned.”

That distinction matters.

Because over the last 13 years, Sansara has quietly evolved into something much deeper than a surf resort or boutique hotel.

It has become a destination centered around movement, wellness, meaningful connection, community, and immersive hospitality – values increasingly shaping the future of luxury travel itself.

What Is Small Luxury Hotels of the World™?

Founded in 1991, Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ represents a global collection of independently owned luxury boutique hotels, each selected through a rigorous vetting process focused on experience, service, design, and authenticity.

Unlike traditional hotel groups or chains, SLH is intentionally “anti-chain and anti-same,” prioritizing individuality over standardization.

Every hotel is personally visited, verified, and reviewed before acceptance into the collection.

Membership is highly selective.

Properties are evaluated not simply on aesthetics or amenities, but on whether they offer something emotionally distinct – a genuine sense of place, thoughtful hospitality, and an experience guests cannot replicate elsewhere.

In recent years – SLH has also expanded its Wellbeing Collection, highlighting hotels around the world that integrate wellness into the core identity of the guest experience rather than treating it as an add-on.

For Sansara, this alignment felt natural.

A Different Definition of Luxury

“For us, luxury has never meant excess of perfection,” says Janel.

“It’s thoughtful details.  Being greeting by name.  Shared meals after surf.  Spaces that make people exhale.  Experiences that leave people feeling more like themselves.”

That philosophy has shaped Sansara from the beginning.

Set along the remote Pacific coastline of Cambutal, Panama, Sansara Resort has built its identity around a slower, more intentional of hospitality – one rooted equally in adventure and restoration.

Surf sessions at sunrise.  Yoga overlooking the ocean.  Retreats centered on wellbeing and transformation.  Meals designed around local ingredients and connection.  A setting where luxury feels grounded in nature rather than separated from it.

What SLH recognized in Sansara is perhaps the same thing guests have been experiencing for years:

A kind of rustic luxury – warm, intentional, immersive, and deeply personal.

Why This Partnership Matters

Joining SLH represents far more than industry recognition.

It opens Sansara to an entirely new global audience of travelers actively seeking independently owned luxury destinations with soul, character, and meaningful experiences.

Through SLH’s international platform, partnerships, and global marketing reach, Sansara now gains visibility among travelers who may never have otherwise discovered a small wellness and surf resort tucked away on Panama’s Pacific coast.

For destinations as remote and intentionally off-the-beaten-path as Cambutal, that visibility matters enormously.

This partnership places Sansara within a worldwide network of boutique properties recognized for excellence in hospitality, while still allowing the resort to remain independently owned and true to our identity.

And perhaps most importantly, it validates something the Sansara team has believed for years:

That luxury travel is evolving.

Today’s travelers are increasingly searching for experiences that feel authentic rather than performative.  They want connection instead of excess.  Presence instead of polish.  Places that feel human.

That shift is exactly where Sansara has always existed.

Built by Community

While the SLH plaque now hangs at the resort, Janel is quick to point out that the achievement belongs to far more people than just the founders.

“This feels like a recognition of the people who built this place alongside us,” she says.

“Our team.  Retreat leaders.  Guests who came back year after year.  The local community.  The people who believed in something a little wild and far off the beaten path.”

In many ways, the partnership represents the culmination of over a decade spent building not only a hotel, but a culture and community around international travel.

And while joining SLH marks a major global step forward for Sansara, the heart of the experience remains unchanged.

Grounded.  Connected.  Intentional.  |  Exactly as it has always been.
